About Morningside PlayCare

 

Morningside PlayCare is hosting the first cohort of The Toddler Language Project, creating an exciting new early childhood Mandarin language immersion lab.   Our program operates Monday through Friday serving children 18 to 36 mos.  Morningside PlayCare values child-centered approaches in which children learn and develop through play, exploration of their environment, and discovery.  We are a small program, licensed to operate with a maximum of 14 children per site, in a residential setting.  Our first cohort is in Morningside Heights. 

 

Our Goal:  To establish a play-based lab childcare at Morningside PlayCare where we immerse toddlers in the Mandarin language, document the process and impact, and create a database for language acquisition in early childhood through play-based immersion.  Visit our Toddler Language Project page  to learn more about this program.

Mandarin Teacher, Early Childhood – Part-Time, Full-Time, Substitute positions.  Work closely and collaboratively with the Executive Director to launch and grow this new program.  Be responsible for developing emergent curriculum inspired by the children’s interests, partnering with parents to help guide children’s growth and development.  Help to create a culture of exploration, respect for nature, and creative play.  All these responsibilities are carried out, while playing and communicating in Mandarin with children who are native speakers of other languages.  This teacher provides direct supervision to the Teaching Assistants and Interns, and reports directly to the Executive Director.   Requirements: Bachelors degree (Masters preferred) and coursework in Early Childhood Education, Linguistics, or TCSOL. You must speak Mandarin, have Early Childhood experience, value child-centered approaches, and have leadership skills.  This is a paid position.

 

Childcare Assistant: Mandarin Immersion - Part-Time or Full-Time and Substitute positions.  Assist the Lead teacher in providing toddlers with an engaging play-based experience of Mandarin immersion. Help guide children’s growth and development, and create a culture of exploration, respect for nature, and creative play. These responsibilities are carried out, while playing and communicating in Mandarin with children who are native speakers of other languages.  Requirements: Coursework or experience in Early Childhood Education; Native level fluency in Mandarin.  This is a paid position.

 

Intern: Mandarin Teacher Assistant – P/T, F/T.  Assist the Lead teacher in providing toddlers with an engaging play-based experience of Mandarin immersion. Help guide children’s growth and development, and create a culture of exploration, respect for nature, and creative play. These responsibilities are carried out, while playing and communicating in Mandarin with children who are native speakers of other languages.  Requirements: Native Mandarin speaker; early childhood course work or experience.  This is a volunteer position.

 

Research Intern – This is a position for a graduate student who is interested in early childhood language immersion.  You will participate in the design, implementation and reporting of a pilot research project that explores and documents various aspects of our program.  This is a volunteer position.  Requirements:  Graduate student in one of the following fields: Linguistics, neuroscience, early childhood education, TCSOL, bilingual education, or other related field.  This is a volunteer internship.

 

Teacher Coach – This is a part-time position for an experienced early childhood teacher. You will coach novice teachers and interns in best practices of early childhood education and assessment and language immersion.  You will model best practices and develop play-based, inquiry curriculum.  Requirements: Bachelors degree (Masters preferred.) At least 4 years previous experience as an early childhood teacher.  No language requirement.  This is a paid position.
