Nanny Listings - Nanny's can be a great option, if started in the earliest years; AND if your Nanny faithfully engages in 100% target language, 100% of the time.  A Nanny trained in eliciting responses from children in the target language is best.  Children who have full comprehension as a result of Nanny exposure, can often be well-positioned for enrollment in a language immersion program during first or second grade, when these schools find the child very attractive.  This is where the child will learn to produce language, as well as comprehend.    View a Nanny Listings Home Page.  https://www.care.com/french-speaking-child-care/new-york-ny

Willing to Move to Another State for Free Mandarin Immersion?

Consider Utah, Minnesota, Delaware, and Portland, Oregon.

A major focus of the Early Learning Center is on the development of social skills. Hands-on and experiential skill development is individualized, as well as in small groups. Children develop independence and work on problem solving. Children learn how to interact with others and how to learn in groups. The curriculum thus includes:

  1. Development of both fine and gross motor skills

  2. Individualized focus on language, literacy and writing skills

  3. Estimation and early math readiness and problem solving

  4. A scientific view of the world: simple experiments

  5. The beginnings of the World Course that will spiral through all years of the Avenues curriculum

  6. Introduction of Chinese and Spanish through 50 percent immersion (see OPEN posts on learning a second language and on immersion).

A chart of the Early Learning Center curriculum is available here.

Partial Immersion Programs

These schools are great for heritage learners who already have some knowledge of or outside exposure to the language; as well as for non-speakers whose parents are seeking a strong early years exposure, without desiring to assure fluency or proficiency.

The International Academy of New York  -  Located on the West Side in the 70's.

Children spend 40% of their school week learning Mandarin or Spanish.  At International Academy of New York, diversity, bilingual, and culture aren’t just words in a viewbook or on a website; they’re at the center of everything we do. Our students come from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds. Our families delight in raising children whose friends come from the Upper East Side, Harlem, Israel, Ecuador, China… truly near and far. We study Central Park, and we study the globe. English, Spanish, and Mandarin are freely spoken throughout the school. Students at International Academy work with teachers from around the world, many of whom are native speakers of Spanish and Mandarin, the focus of our bilingual curriculum. Walk through our halls, and you’ll see Chinese, Spanish, and Latin culture in every direction. A parent once said, “This is the first school I’ve seen where you don’t even have to talk about diversity. You just live it.” I appreciate that compliment, but we will always be a school fully engaged in that conversation.

Cultural Immersion Programs

These schools are great for for mixed heritage or other families who wish to steep their children in a particular culture in a high quality learning environment.  These schools do not necessarily have language immersion programs.
